Sophia University Students Immerse Themselves in STEM, Culture, and Campus Life at UNC Charlotte

Categories: General News

Charlotte Global recently welcomed a group of 20 students from Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, from February 15 to March 7 as part of the annual English for STEM program offered by the Office of Intercultural and Educational Experiences (OIEE). As the short-term and specialized programming unit of UNC Charlotte’s English Language Training Institute, OIEE designs immersive academic experiences that blend language development with cultural engagement. For many students in this year’s cohort, the trip to Charlotte marked their first time traveling to the United States, making the experience both meaningful and transformative.

This year also marked 18 years of exchange partnership between Charlotte Global and Sophia University, reflecting a long-standing commitment to international collaboration and student exchange. During their three-week stay, the students strengthened their English proficiency through STEM-focused coursework while gaining first hand exposure to U.S. classroom environments and teaching styles. Lessons emphasized practical communication skills, critical thinking, and collaboration, which are key components of academic and professional success in global STEM fields.

Beyond the classroom, participants engaged deeply with U.S. culture through campus life and community experiences, including site visits to UNC Charlotte’s very own CIPHER and Super Fab Lab, as well as to multinational companies such as Siemens Energy and NASCAR powerhouse Joe Gibbs Racing. The group connected with pen pals from UNC Charlotte’s Japanese Studies program as well as other international and domestic students, creating opportunities for language exchange and cross-cultural dialogue. These interactions often extended beyond scheduled activities, with students bonding over shared meals, campus events, and informal conversations that fostered mutual understanding and lasting friendships.

We look forward to continued engagement with Sophia University as we strengthen our shared commitment to global learning and intercultural exchange.
